Akil Gibbons

Akil Gibbons is an award-winning director whose works have debuted at Sundance and distributed by BET, CNN, The Daily Show, Netflix, Sony Pictures, Viacom, and Vice.

Raised in Atlanta, Gibbons first picked up a camera in middle school, inspired by his frequent visits to Blockbuster and his hero, Spike Lee. Learning of topics through Lee’s films that he may not have grasped otherwise, Gibbons formed his unique critical perspective as a Black filmmaker, fusing narrative, and social documentation.

At Vice Media, Gibbons’ work garnered millions of earned media impressions. His knack for telling stories that resonate covered topics including civil rights, capitalism, mass incarceration, technology, and hip-hop culture.

Akil continues to create impactful work for studios, networks, and brands as a director, cinematographer and producer. Directing clients include AT&T, Google, Intel, and MasterCard.

Gibbons is part of the Black Filmmakers Collective, composed of over 100 producers, directors, and cinematographers whose initiative Change the Lens is committed to increasing the number of Black workers at all levels of the commercial and music video industry.
