joyce keokham is a nonbinary storyteller who practices in fusions of filmmaking, biography, and poetry. Their work evokes human connection, community empowerment, and radical self-love.
Before directing, joyce was disappointed by the absence and/or appearance of type-casted Asian-Americans in media; they also experienced the ongoing perpetuation of stereotypes during their auditions in film & tv as an actor.
Seeking more agency and opportunities for change, joyce first began working behind the scenes as a producer. As a producer, they saw a fundamental improvement when the decision makers in development care for the talent(s) on screen and are not foreign to the communities they hope to represent.
Finding other filmmakers who shared the same values, joyce produced branded content at Onlunchbreak Inc. and worked as a casting agent with The Pull Inc. for a few years before they began directing themselves.
In 2020, joyce debuted as a director with a pilot titled WYA WYD - “Where You At? What You Doin?” which documents transient 20 year olds who struggle to survive societal scams in narrative form. The project became a recipient of The NYC Women’s Fund for Media, Music and Theatre supported by MOME and NYFA.
joyce continues to make short form work that expands our understanding of one another, especially for “marginalized voices.” They are currently represented by MATHS Production for commercial work.
