Matt Timmiss

Matt Timmiss is a film director and producer with a global outlook on production, licensing and distribution - and a keen eye for bringing the camp, the queer, and the beautiful through the screen to a wider audience.

Based in London and originally from Hertfordshire, Matt also has a foot in LA, Paris, Sydney, and Cambridge. Always thinking about the project at hand, he’s forever improving and developing his craft. Happy working across different mediums - whether it’s feature-length documentaries, music videos, commercials, corporate projects or narrative features - Matt’s mission is to bring compelling characters and unexplored storylines to life.

Notable works include his moving and uplifting documentary City of Queens, set amidst the humour, glamour, and beauty of the London drag scene. The documentary was supported and produced by Great Guns, with CEO Laura Gregory producing, after Matt screened her five minutes of shot footage. It won plaudits for its ability to ground those narratives within the context of tenacity, resilience, and courage required from those pursuing drag - painting an authentic and full picture of life as a London drag queen. Despite this specific location, the response to the film has been truly international. Having already been sold to Sky in the UK and Italy and Paramount in Australia for streaming service 10 Play, it has now been acquired by US streaming service Peacock - with a view to pursue a US remake.

Following Matt and Great Guns’ success with City of Queens, he also helmed the promo for Ava Max’s single ‘My Head & My Heart’, working with the commissioner at Atlantic to craft a camp and cool music video. Working with Bimini Bon Boulash (runner up of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 2) who he has a working relationship with, and his favourite choreographer, he filmed under covid restrictions in Heaven nightclub. It now sits at 1.6 million views on Ava Max’s YouTube channel.

Following this success, Atlantic approached Matt once more for another video - a special Halloween film for Charli XCX’s single ‘Good Ones’ featuring a whole host of queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK (A’Whora, Krystal Versace, Cherry Valentine, Elektra Fence and Asttina Mandella). With Charli XCX so well regarded in the LGBTQ+ community, it was a chance to bring her fanbase and the Drag Race fanbase together under one sickening video. Filmed in Asylum Chapel, the promo currently has over 600k views on YouTube and is still growing.

Advertising, marketing, and branding has always been part of Matt’s life. Growing up, his father was Brand Manager for Shreddies and later Marketing Director for Cereal Partners (Nestle/General Mills), so conversations around brands and ads would be a regular occurrence around the dinner table. Nowadays, his sister is a graphic designer, redesigning logos and packaging for major brands, and his housemate is a 3D motion graphics artist, creating some of the biggest title sequences and logos for British and US TV shows - so these conversations continue every day with the people that surround him.

Matt has also worked in some of the biggest agencies in London, WPP companies including Hogarth, Ogilvy, Wavemaker, and Grey, as well as Havas, Craft, Iris, and Krow - helping them create mood films and pitch decks to win new clients and business.

Having these conversations at home, and working in such reputable and successful agencies, has given Matt a great understanding of what clients are looking for, how to approach projects in the commercial world and, most importantly perhaps, understanding brand positioning. With a career trajectory that can be considered fairly unique - seeing Matt move almost in reverse from a full-length feature, to promos, to branded content - it’s truly exciting to see what he does next.

When he’s not filming, Matt is busy (and in love with) crafting bespoke paper sculpture headpieces.
